Description/Job Summary

HGL (HydroGeologic, Inc.), is a full-service environmental science, engineering, and construction firm with over 30 years of experience providing environmental restoration solutions to federal, state, local, and private sector clients. HGL is one of the few companies that remain committed to research and development, offering a dynamic work environment for creative, energetic professionals. Currently, HGL has a part-time position open for a Principal Engineer, reporting to our Corporate Headquarters in Reston, VA.


Supervise a multidisciplinary staff of engineers and technicians, perform technical reviews/ project management and lead engineering design efforts for reclamation projects. Serve as a Senior Manager responsible for the management of project schedules, deliverables, and budgets, as assigned. Coordinate with other project/program team members and consultants and oversee profit/loss for associated projects and business unit portfolio. Assist in developing new business focused on remediation, reclamation mine engineering, and treatment plant operations.

  • Expertise and strong proficiency with the following software: AutoCAD; ArcGIS; Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and MS Project.
  • Solid knowledge of hard and soft rock mining practices and proven mine or reclamation/remediation planning, permitting and design experience. 

Preferred Skills

Familiarity with water modeling and 3-D visualization tools, and Carlson suite of mine related software.  Experience in client interaction and business development, marketing and sales strongly desired.

Required Experience

HGL is looking for a seasoned engineer who has 10+ years of hands-on mine or environmental reclamation and remediation planning and design experience in addition to overseeing the production of plans and specifications by others.  Knowledge of the regulatory and environmental climate surrounding the mining reclamation industry is important. 

Preferred Experience

Team Player capable of working with teammates and clients.  Individual preferably will have several years of experience in an operating mine, and/or working for a state or federal entity overseeing mine permitting or preferably abandoned mine reclamation work. Working relationships with regulatory agencies, mining companies and the associated stakeholders from associated interest groups throughout the northwestern U.S. is strongly preferred.

Required Education

Bachelor of Science in Mining, Civil, Geological or Environmental Engineering or comparable.

Preferred Education

Master of Engineering or Master of Science in Mining, Civil, Geological or Environmental Engineering or comparable.

Required Qualifications

Must have current P.E. registration.  

Preferred Qualifications

Project Management Professional (PMP) through Project Management Institute (PMI) and Construction Quality Management (CQM) Certification from the US Army Corps of Engineers.
