HGL provides environmental engineering, remediation, and construction services, as well as Military Munitions Response Program Support, to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of Energy, and other federal and state government clients. HGL has a position open for Director, Quality Control to oversee and implement the company’s Quality Management System (QMS) in a systematic, organized manner, including the application of sufficient quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) practices. This position manages and coordinates the corporate quality program for environmental remediation, military munitions response, mine reclamation, water resource management, modeling and optimization, and other architect/engineering service-related contracts and projects.

This position may be supported from any HGL office: locations include Reston, VA, Denver CO, Overland park, KS, Albany NY, Phoenix AZ, San Antonio TX, Orlando FL, and Hudson OH. Other locations may be considered based on candidate qualifications and demonstrated ability to work remotely.


The successful candidate will be responsible for corporate and project QC programs including reviewing and developing procedures; developing plans and reports; planning and implementing field work; conducting audits, assessments, and corrective actions; and reporting. He/she must communicate effectively with corporate management, clients, subcontractors, and project managers and staff to ensure that corporate and contract quality requirements are met.

Responsibilities and expectations for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Implement HGL’s QMS across all programs, contracts, and projects.
  • Review/Update the QMS, including quality SOPs, annually.
  • Provide independent quality management oversight of project performance.
  • Perform project quality audits and surveillances.
  • Investigate and develop mitigation strategies for major non-conformances.
  • Represent HGL during QA/QC audits conducted by clients or regulatory agencies.
  • Provide ongoing and annual quality training to HGL staff.
  • Review project bid documents and coordinate with operations and proposal teams to ensure that planning documents and scopes of work are thorough and complete.
  • Track and report on key quality performance indicators monthly.

Required Skills

  • Technical knowledge in the areas of environmental engineering, site remediation, and munitions response.
  • Knowledge of the application of root cause investigations associated with nonconforming conditions.
  • Proficiency in developing teams and providing training.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize, work well under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required to meet deadlines.

Required Experience

  • 10+ years of experience with QA/QC of environmental and remediation/construction projects.
  • Demonstrated experience applying corrective actions to reconcile nonconforming conditions.
  • Experience with Military Munitions Response Program, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and/or U.S. Department of Energy quality processes and procedures. 
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 and ASQ/ANSI E4:2014.

Preferred Experience

  • ASME Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) Certification Program.
  • Professional Engineer licensure.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in College Field of Study.

Preferred Education

Master's Degree is a plus. 


  • A pre-hire drug test is required.
  • Position requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Travel as required for site audits and surveillances, training, and client/project meetings as required. Travel anticipated approximately 20%.
