HGL has a position open for Senior Sediment Scientist to support HGL's growing sediment practices. The position will mostly support the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and private clients.
This position may be supported from these HGL offices: Denver CO, Overland Park KS, San Francisco CA, or Seattle WA.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the technical aspects of multiple sediment projects, including CERCLA remedial investigations and feasibility studies; remedial designs and construction; operations; and third-party oversight.
Responsibilities and expectations for this position include:
Designing, managing, and conducting environmental field investigations and remediation projects at hazardous waste/contaminated sites.
Supervising and supporting environmental and engineering projects and tasks involving characterization and remediation of sediment, soil, surface water, and groundwater
Leading components of a large sediment remedial design effort.
Overseeing the development and review of maps, drawings, and specifications, data collection, data entry and analysis, oversight of field operations, and cost estimation.
Serving as a mentor to less experienced staff.
Developing project budgets based on scope and developing project schedules to meet performance and pay milestones.
Strong communication skills to interact effectively with clients, regulators, project team members, and company management.
Ability to support business development efforts, including scoping and developing cost estimates for competitive procurement.
Executing multiple projects and tasks concurrently.
Periodic business travel is required. Travel is anticipated to consist of visits to client offices and project sites. Travel is expected about 30% of the year.
This is a Senior level position and requires 6 to 8 years of related work experience. The successful candidate must have experience in the following:
Professional experience working on contaminated sediment sites.
Client management, regulatory interface, and management of teams performing technical tasks and activities.
Strong technical writing, organization, and oral communication skills.
Directly relevant experience that demonstrates a history of responsibility, initiative, motivation, and creative problem solving.
Willing to participate in project technical tasks ranging from fieldwork and field operations, development of specifications, data management, evaluations, and report preparation.
Computer proficiency in MS Office Suite.
The following experience is preferred, but not required:
Experience with hydraulic, hydrodynamic, and hydrologic modeling.
Training and experience with fluvial geomorphology.
Sediment investigation, design, and remediation experience.
EPA Superfund experience is strongly desired.
Knowledge of CERCLA process and work phases is strongly desired.
Current certification of OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training is a plus.
The Senior Sediment Scientist position requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, Hydrogeology, or a related environmental field of study.
The following degrees are preferred, but not required.
Master of Science (MS) or Doctorate (PhD) in a technical field.
The following certificates are preferred, but not required.
Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Professional Geologist (PG).
